Article Contributed by Anna Miller

As with any aspect in life, there are both pros and cons to working from home. On the plus side is the fact that you don’t have to commute to and from work every day; you don’t have to deal with careless drivers, frayed tempers and traffic snarls; you get to keep your own hours; and you can work without someone peering over your shoulder. But on the downside, you tend to get distracted more easily, people don’t often consider what you do as a real “job” because you’re at home the whole day, and your social skills start to take a backseat because you don’t get to interact with coworkers and colleagues. In general, working from home is an attractive option if you’re ready to learn three important lessons and avoid the following traps:

The “easy” trap

It may be run out of your home, but that does not mean that this business is going to be easy. When you start to believe that it’s going to be a breeze to manage your home business, you’re setting yourself up for failure. You don’t put in the necessary hard work to grow your business and make a success of it. And you begin to find excuses for everything that goes wrong because of your laziness and laidback attitude. Lesson number one – a home business takes much more dedication and effort than a regular business.

The “money” trap

If you’re working on the web, you’re going to be swamped with offers that promise to make you filthy rich in no time and with no effort. They make making money very easy and simple. All you need to do is send in some money, and you’re definitely going to rake in much more than you’ve dreamed of in a few short months, according to the spiels that bombard you through email and website promotional offers. If you want to work from home on the Internet and make a success of it, never ever pay money in exchange for job opportunities. Instead, visit legitimate sites that allow you to sell your services and which regulate payment through escrow accounts so that you have unbiased arbiters to deal with any conflict of interest. Lesson number two – you will make money working from home, but it will take a fair amount of time for you to establish yourself and make enough to quit your regular job.

The “time” trap

And finally, you may wake up every morning thinking you have the whole day ahead to get your work done. But if you don’t set designated hours for work and stick to them, you’re going to find that the day has gone by and you’ve not even done 10 percent of what was scheduled for the day. It’s very easy to get distracted when working from home, what with the television, the Internet, and family distracting you and demanding your time. Lesson number three – unless you set schedules and keep to them, you’re bound to fall behind on your work and miss deadlines when working from home.

Article Contributed by Tami Stodghill

If you think about it, there are “ideal prospects” out there everywhere. And they are ideal, for one, because they are used to commission-based sales and have learned to live and budget based on that. They are people who are open, usually, to alternative sources of income as they probably have had to be. Those ideal prospects I’m talking about are realtors and people who work at car dealerships and small business owners.

The economy has changed the game for these people. High-priced items such as homes and vehicles have fallen prey to the financial situation that so many people are affected by. Which means that with slower sales, their commissions suffer. And that means that your opportunity could offer them a great backup tool for generating income.

These potential prospects are located in every neighborhood, every city, and all around the globe. And if presented right, your opportunity could not only solve the issues they are facing, but grow your business in the process. We have found that by contacting these professions, they are generally open to new sources of revenue and are not as hesitant to try a business that could allow them to replace or supplement their income. They understand direct sales and commission structures and therefore, the need to explain exactly how those things work is unnecessary.

If your opportunity is thriving in this recession, then you can greatly benefit from targeting this type of customer. What will be most important in your approach, is that you present your opportunity with accurate and complete information as to what will be necessary for them to be successful. By presenting your product or service in a way which demonstrates how it is still a necessity or benefit in this economy, you will automatically show them that it is a viable source for them to run with. In our case, we learned everything we could about the real estate market and its current condition, researched specific areas and then targeted realtors and car dealer reps in those areas. We also know our product line inside and out, which assists us in better presenting all the benefits that the products offer, even in this economy. If you can spin your product as useful and with potential, it will help you sell your opportunity to these professions.

We also have talked more with small store owners. Our local printer/copy shop owner asked all about our business when we had some additional business cards printed. With small business owners suffering the effects of the economy (especially in storefronts) , many are looking for additional ways to generate income themselves. They still have their overheads such as lease, utilities, materials, etc, and with business down, they are wanting to find a way to “ride out” the slow business period by bringing in outside income. These businesses can be restaurants, salons, any type of small store/retail, auto body and detail shops, convenience stores owned by private owners, coffee shops, etc. All of them are being affected right now and have seen decreases in sales, so if you can present your opportunity in a way that will allow them to research the potential and reap all the information they can, you will find they will definitely consider your option.

We make it a point to stay friendly with every business we frequent. In maintaining a positive, outgoing and congenial attitude when you shop or visit a business, you will portray the benefits that your opportunity has afforded you. People will sense that the freedom and financial security that your business provides you is a viable option. And I can’t tell you how many times our simple, pleasant demeanors have started a conversation that has led to others wanting to know about what we do.

Take some time to familiarize yourself with your local businesses personally, or even those types of businesses via the internet. Your ideal prospect exists in many areas and you can actually utilize the economic situation to your advantage.

Article Contributed by Tami Stodghill

I have been contacted the last few weeks by some people who have purchased a business opportunity or are wanting to do just that. But many of them are concerned they are not “natural sellers”. They either have a limited past in sales, an unsuccessful past in sales or are worried they won’t be able to sell the opportunity/service/product in such a way that they will profit from their venture. When we started out, my past was NOT in sales.

Actually, our backgrounds were in Press Relations, Freelance Writing and Technical Support. We didn’t have to worry about quotas or reaching sales goals, so this was an issue for us as well. Would we have what it takes?

The answer is that anyone can be successful in sales. And all it takes is the proper mindset. Seriously. And if you can adopt that mindset, you will find success in your venture. I’ve covered other things that are important to home-business success, and please note that these are all still a must when it comes to achieving the kind of success that most people want—consistency, positive attitude, honesty, integrity and ongoing training and mentoring. But equally as important is the approach you take with your business. Adopting this mindset released us from fear of failure and being able to move forward with our business.

Stop right now and ask yourself, “if I had a million dollars in my bank account right now, would I be afraid of calling this prospect back and chancing rejection?” Because it will instantly change your approach and your selling technique. It will free you to speak with prospects honestly and openly and will take the “desperate” out of your sales pitch. You will relax and say what you mean—covering the best about your opportunity with total self-confidence.

Let me explain further, why this approach will make you the best representative you can be for your business…

When you convince yourself that each and every sale will not determine your success, and that you have breathing room, so-to-speak, your technique instantly alters to one that projects success. And people need to know that they can believe in YOU as well as the opportunity you are selling. Since I dealt with a great number of editors through email when I was in Press Relations, phone interaction was rarely needed and I have to admit that my phone skills cried out for a complete makeover. I dreaded dialing a number to return a call to a prospect and when I did, I instantly tensed up and got ready for the rejection. Obviously, I went nowhere fast. And through the advice of a seasoned colleague, I completely revamped my approach and mindset to that of a millionaire. And lo and behold—I found success.

People don’t want to buy into a business through someone who lacks confidence, seems beaten down or desperate. That’s all there is to it. They want to follow the lead of others who are experiencing success and who are relaxed in the pursuit of that success. By telling myself that no call I made would make-or-break me, I went into it without apprehension, without trepidation and without butterflies in my stomach. Every lead wasn’t going to decide my success or failure. There will always be people out there who are looking for something, and your opportunity might not be what they are looking for, no matter what your technique is. So to stress over it, only displays a business that isn’t that desirable. When you phone or contact prospects with confidence and with the attitude that you know you believe in your business, people gain a sense of trust and will, in turn, believe in your opportunity too.

Take a few minutes each day to ensure your mindset is what you need it to be to make every call and contact count. Tell yourself that your bank account reflects your success, so that the sense of desperation and “overselling” that can occur are no longer an issue. Our lives, and our business, changed the moment we took that advice. And I guarantee YOU will find that others will respond and will find what you have to offer is exactly what they want for themselves.

Article Contributed by Lloyd Burrell

The Small Business Boom

With all the funding available these days for starting your own business, it is no wonder so many people are choosing to do so. And with so many new businesses around, it is important to ensure that you have the edge it takes to draw a profit in your market if you are starting your own business. The best way to do this by spending as much time as you can afford planning and making smart investments.

Your principal, whether it consists of loans or your own saved cash, is the fuel that will get your business off the ground. The more you invest initially, the longer it will take for you to start turning out profits, but the more properly equipped for success you will be (assuming you plan well).
Most home office set-up investments are used to purchase a few basic things:

A personal computer

An office desk

Peripherals (printers, scanners, extra speakers, fax machines, etc.)

Other job-specific necessities (computer programs, envelopes, etc.)

Of these, the most consistently needed are the first two: a computer and a desk. With the speed at which technology is constantly changing and developing, it is hard to offer consistent advice about what to look for in a computer. Office desks, on the other hand, serve a more basic, less complex function, and it is therefore easier to offer solid advice about this essential purchase.

When Shopping For an Office Desk

Keep in mind every aspect of your business throughout the process of shopping for your desk. You should know how much business you expect to be doing, what the realistic requirements of that business would be, how much time you intend to spend at your desk each day and doing what tasks, and what your relationships with your customers and associates will be like.

A Desk That Speaks Success

Ultimately, the customer is the most important element in the success of any business. The more personable your business appears to your customers, the more likely they will be to choose your product or service. So of course having an attractive office desk is important if you ever plan on meeting customers in person.

Some businesses, however, are run entirely online, and simply having a tidy working area to post a picture of is probably sufficient if this is your case. You can save a lot of money by buying a more plain-looking desk, but you should not risk appearing unprofessional to your customers in doing so. Know what the standard in your industry looks like and try to meet it without exceeding it by too much. Bush Furniture retailers typically offer a range of products that cover all bases.

The Right Tools for the Job

Once you have gotten an idea of what you are looking for concerning the first thing you notice about a desk—its appearance—the next step is to come up with a general idea of the range of functions you need your desk to serve. There is an enormous range of available desks tailored to every imaginable function; in order to know what desk is right for you, you have to make a lot of decisions about what exactly your business is going to do. How extensive will your customer relations be? Will you correspond via email, telephone, fax, conventional mail, or all of these? Will you be shipping packages regularly? How much storage space will you be needing?

Each of these decisions has implications concerning what you will need in a desk, and under-planning by overlooking any of these details can be a very costly mistake. Used office desks are not easy to sell, and new ones are not cheap to buy. Make sure you know what equipment besides a personal computer your desk will have to accommodate. Typically any place you can buy Bush Furniture is a good place to find the desk that best meets your needs.

You Know What Is Best for You

While all of these factors are important, it is also important not to overlook the way you feel about the desk you are thinking of purchasing. Starting your own businesses is one of the hardest things you can do, and if you are serious about doing it without getting burnt out, it is important that you are satisfied with your work environment. Having the right office desk improves your attitude toward your business, increasing your chances for success.

Finally, because of the long hours required of entrepreneurs, it is important that you find a desk that fits your body type. Injuries related to computer use and other tasks that involve repetitive motions of the hands are no joke. The last thing you need is constant pain holding you back from accomplishing all you are capable of in your market. Take your time and find the right desk for you.

One of the most rewarding home income opportunities is to start your own gift basket business. This is one of the fastest growing businesses of the decade and one of the simplest to set up. Have fun while making money from home with a home based gift basket business.

What do you need to Start a Gift Basket Home Business?

You need to have some creative or design ability to put together attractive gift baskets and to come up with novel ideas and themes. You should also have good interpersonal skills in order to market and sell your gift baskets successfully. Organizational skills are required to manage your time properly and to schedule your work to meet deadlines and fill orders. It is easy to learn how to make gift baskets and equipment requirements are minimal.

Gift Basket Business Start Up Costs

This home income opportunity has relatively low start up costs. Initial inventory when starting a gift basket business can run from a couple of hundred dollars to a couple of thousand dollars depending on what inventory items you buy and how much stock you want to carry. Your inventory will depend on the kind of gift baskets you decide to make and sell. Your gift basket choices will be determined by your particular target market. It is important to clearly define your target market so that you focus on those people who are most likely to purchase your gift baskets and become your customers. Concentrating your sales and marketing efforts on the correct niche market will result in success rather than wasted time and effort. You will also know the best type of gift baskets to create and sell to this target market.

Establish your Choice of Gift Baskets

The standard gift baskets you offer will be the core of your gift basket business. When starting your gift basket business it is not cost effective to carry inventory for too many different gift baskets – rather focus on a smaller number of versatile gift baskets. Once you have decided who your target market is you will be able to accurately select the range of gift baskets you are going to initially make and sell. Choose gift basket ideas that can be used for different occasions – a chocolate gift basket is just right for Easter as well as Mother’s Day and ongoing birthdays, anniversaries.

Making Gift Baskets

Gift baskets can be created in as little as 20 minutes and you can create a beautiful gift basket without any craft experience. Once you have decided on your theme and have sourced the inventory it is really quick and easy to put the gift basket together. The more gift baskets you make the easier and quicker it becomes!

Marketing and Selling the Gift Baskets

Proper marketing of your gift baskets will ensure that home income opportunities like this are successful. However don’t be intimidated by marketing- see it as a creative project where you can put your entrepreneurial spirit to good use! From visiting potential customers with samples of your gift baskets to advertising your gift basket business in local papers and magazines there are a wide variety of ways to sell you gift baskets. The most important aspect of your marketing strategy will be customer satisfaction. If you provide a quality product you will keep getting those orders.

What Sort of Income can you Expect to Earn?

Home income opportunities in the gift basket business are very good but it depends on how hard you work and how well you market and sell your gift baskets. Most gift basket businesses expect to net between 20 to 30 percent of their selling price. This is usually achieved by applying a 90 to 100 percent mark up on the cost of the items in the gift basket. The potential for making money is high – it is really up to you how much.

Starting a home based business is a great way to make a living. And right now with the way the economy is there are more and more people researching their options. Here are some tips to help you get started on your search for a home business.

Starting down a new career path can be both exciting and terrifying. There are a lot of tools on the market that can help you determine what type of career field you should enter. But what if your chosen “career path” is being an entrepreneur and running a home-based business? Do the rules change? Below are five questions to ask yourself to help you determine what type of business might be right for you.
1. What is your passion?
Answer this question with the first thing that comes to mind: If money were no object and you could do anything, what would you do? You might have answered “be a writer”, “speak at conferences,” “bring my product idea to life” or any number of things. Whatever your answer, this most likely is your passion. I challenge you to take the time to ponder this and see if there is a way to bring your dream to fruition.
2. What types of things did you like to do as a child?
Many times the toys and games we loved as children give us a glimpse into who we have become as adults. If you loved climbing trees, you may now be an “outdoorsy” type of person. Think about how this might be incorporated into your business. For instance, you might enjoy setting up outdoor birthday parties for children or selling herbs from your backyard garden.
3. What type of products would you be interested in representing?
If you’re looking in the direction of direct sales, whether that be your own product or an established home-based business option, you need to think through what types of products you’d be comfortable presenting to your customers. Take the time to do some research and find a product that truly excites you. Your customers will see your sincerity and that can sell a product just as easily as a fancy presentation.
4. What skills and experience do you bring to the table?
If you’ve left the corporate world in favor of working at home, you’ve undoubtedly brought with you a set of skills. There may be a way to market those skills in a new way and turn them into a profitable business. For instance, if you were an executive assistant you may be able to type 80 words or more per minute. You could set up shop as a Virtual Assistant and help other business owners in processing orders, transcribing documents and much more.
5. Are you thinking outside of the box?
Most of us have a fear of the unknown. We many times assume that if we haven’t done something before it is simply out of reach. This carries over to the business world as well. We take our products or services and market them in the same way that we see other business owners using. However, it can be much more effective to find new and innovative ways to market. One home-based business owner I know sells stuffable toy kits. Instead of using the usual home parties and birthday party events, she works almost exclusively with children’s hospitals doing fundraisers. She makes a great living and helps not only the hospitals, but the children as well. She is a great example of unique marketing and overcoming the mundane marketing methods that so many business owners resign themselves to.
Your home-based business should be unique to you. It should make you want to get up each morning excited about the possibilities of the day ahead. Take the time to thoroughly think through the questions above and you’ll be on your way to making a great, well thought out decision that has your name written all over it!

The phone was ringing and I couldn’t find the energy to answer it. I knew I should answer, needed to answer, but couldn’t summon the strength necessary. I’d been fighting the discouragement and frustration of a lingering illness for months and didn’t see any end in sight. Doctor’s said I’d see an improvement within six months of beginning this new medicine, but a month in and nothing felt different, in fact, I felt worse. I couldn’t imagine how my business was going to survive if something didn’t change soon.
Dealing with sickness as a mom is always challenging. When you add in the responsibilities of a business it can feel downright impossible. As I dealt with my health problems over the course of the last year, I’ve found a few ways to keep my business afloat while I’m healing.

Schedule your time in small chunks.
During the toughest weeks of my illness, I would set daily goals like “work for one hour” and “work on laundry.” By giving myself small goals like these I was almost always able to achieve them. It is amazing how crossing things off from my to-do list helped me to feel productive. My efficiency was a far cry from what it normally is, but I felt encouraged by these accomplishments.
It’s also imperative to schedule specific times to rest. Despite the fact that I was sick, I felt guilty for feeling so tired all of the time. By penciling in fifteen minutes or so at a time to rest, I was freed from the guilt. It became one more item to check off of my daily to-do list.
The extra benefit was that scheduling it in helped my three-year old to adjust to these short nap times. I would lay on the couch and rest and he would sit with me and watch a movie or play the Wii. This way I always knew where he was and he knew I was there for him if he needed me.
Outsource as much as possible.
My virtual assistant (VA), without even being aware of it, was crucial to me during this time. She was able to take on some of the tasks that I do on a regular basis. What a relief to know that I could count on her to do the things that HAD to be done. Even the weeks when I was at my lowest I knew the necessary tasks were taken care of.
If your kids are old enough you can “outsource” some additional chores to them while you’re healing. My six-year old was such a great source of hope and help to me. By helping me more than usual with tasks like laundry, vacuuming and even cooking (she can put crescent rolls on a cookie sheet better than any other six-year old I know), she felt like she was assisting in my recovery. So often our kids feel helpless, like there is no way that they can help us when we’re ill. This was a wonderful way for her to feel needed and helpful.
Let your family help.
During the months that I dealt with health problems, my family played a crucial role in keeping my business afloat. My husband would often take the kids out to dinner or simply outside to play, giving me time to rest and work if I felt up to it.
Grandma, too, comes in especially handy if she’s available and willing. Although, a neighbor or good friend may be willing to help out when needed.
Don’t take on too much.
Even when you’re feeling your best it’s important to learn the art of saying no. Know your limits and don’t go overboard – even with good activities. When you’re dealing with sickness, it’s imperative that you be honest with yourself about your limits. Don’t try to take on all that you would were you well.
When faced with making a decision about a new project or other activity you’re considering, write out your schedule and take a close look at it. Can you afford to add anything? Is there anything that can be cut?
Be nice to yourself.
Take the time to treat yourself to a small reward near the end of each day. This can be something as simple as taking a bubble bath or going out for fast food instead of cooking. Don’t let guilt overwhelm you. Remember, the better care you take of yourself, the more energy you’ll have for those tasks like cooking and laundry that now seem exhausting.

According to the National Center for Policy Analysis there are nearly 17 million home-based businesses in the U.S. today. As the number of business rise, it becomes increasingly more difficult to effectively market a small business. And when the small business is run by mom with a minuscule advertising the budget, the challenge becomes even tougher. As moms trying to make our way in this billion dollar industry, how do we best focus our marketing efforts?
Do Your Homework
The best way to get good results from your marketing efforts is to research the sites you’re considering. Look for websites that are aimed at your target market, that have premium ad placements and that are willing to share their traffic statistics, number of subscribers, etc.
Be Bold
Statistics show that the bigger the ad, the higher the response. Double Click, a digital marketing firm, did a study in 2006 that showed a “strong correlation between the size of ads and their clickthrough performance.” So, whenever possible, choose a banner size larger than the standard 468 x 60. It may be pricier, but the results should be worth the extra expense.
Think fresh
Try to find innovative ways to reach your market. Consider trying a rich media campaign that includes a video advertisement, banners formatted in Flash, and other interactive ads. By finding new ways to present your business or product, you’ll catch the eye of viewers who might not normally have noticed your advertisement.
Be personal
The potential customers who view your ads want you to connect with them. They want to know how your product or service will make a difference in their lives. Write your ad copy in such a way that it brings the viewers need for your product to their attention.
Another way to make your advertising more personal is to use images – especially real-life photographs. You can find royalty free photos
Be Unique
Make your ad stand out by creating something different and unique – something that represents your company well. Diana Ennen, a publicist and president of VirtualWordPublishing.com states, “With so much competition out there today, it’s important to make your ad stand out and speak directly to your target audience. No one knows your business and clients better than you, so create the ad that tells everyone why they should buy from you.”
Repeat
The number of times a potential customer views your advertisement has a direct link to their perception of your product/brand. Look for websites with a high volume of traffic and don’t be afraid to ask for any traffic statistics or click-thru statistics that they can provide.
Finding effective ways to market your business can seem overwhelming. By following these simple tips, you can get the best possible results for your advertising efforts. Remember that your customers form opinions about your products based on the information you provide, so make sure that your ads are the best they can be.

Blogging is quickly becoming the new favorite for small business marketers. Mainly because of the amazing results they received when they blog regularly. And publicity isn’t the only benefit to blogging. There are many ways that blogging can add merit to your business. In fact, The Wall Street Journal recently featured The CWAHM blog in an article on how blogging can help small businesses create a buzz for their products and services. The results from this were amazing and prove that blogging truly works: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB120526706660828097.html?mod=ITPWSJ_20.
Here are the top ten ways to use blogs to increase your business revenue.
1. Ad revenue – Offering paid advertising on your blog is one of the easiest ways to see tangible evidence of the benefits of blogging.
2. Link swaps – Swapping links with other like-minded bloggers increases your standing with search engines. One of the biggest blogs available, problogger.net, recently completed a survey in an attempt to find where bloggers get the most traffic? The overwhelming response? Google at 46%. This shows us how important search engine ranking are. Link swaps are just one way to improve yours.
3. Reviews – Another growing trend online is that of the customer review. People appreciate reading the thoughts of others before they purchase a product. It doesn’t seem to matter how big or small the product, either. Posting reviews of books you’ve read, CDs you love, etc, is a great way to generate traffic for your blog.
4. Free offers - Who doesn’t love a freebie? There are many ways of using freebies to your advantage. You can offer a free ebook when someone signs up for your newsletter is an easy way to build your subscriber base. Many blogs also offer contests for those who post comments or interact in other ways on the blog.
5. Blog tours – Being a part in a blog tour is like being the next stop along the railroad. If set up correctly, the tour will send participants from one blog to the next to read more about whatever topic the tour is covering. I’ve participated in many blog tours for book releases. It’s a lot of fun and a great way to bring new readers to your blog.
6. Networking – It goes without saying that building relationships with people is one of the oldest ways of gaining long-time, loyal customers (or in this case, readers). Taking part in the comments discussion on blogs and forums is a great way to do this. The key, though, is to be authentic. Don’t simply blast places with the link to your blog; take part in the discussion and provide useful information – not just your URL.
7. Directories – Listing your blog in blog directories is probably not the best way to generate traffic, but it can be useful in certain ways. It’s a great way to connect with other like-minded bloggers and possibly generate some link exchanges, etc.
8. Press/Media - Getting media attention can be challenging. One great way to bring your blog to the attention of the media is to send out Press Releases when something newsworthy happens on your site. For instance, when I offered a free e-book on my site for Mother’s Day I put together a press release to announce it to the world.
9. Consistency – Posting on a regular basis is key. Try to find a schedule that works for you and stick to it. Even if you can’t blog every day, work to get posts out there two to three times a week. Most blogging software, including WordPress and Blogger, allow you to set the date and time our post will be published. Utilize tools like this to keep your blog consistently updated with fresh, new content.
10. Updates – Finding ways to keep your readers informed is a sure-fire way to keep them coming back to your blog. There are a quite a few ways of accomplishing this, such as offering a newsletter, setting up a Feedburner.com account, and making your RSS feeds easy to find and subscribe to.
Diana Ennen, co-author Virtual Assistant – The Series: Become a Highly Successful, Sought After VA, and co-host of MomCast Live, has been blogging for the past few years and states, “One of the greatest benefits I see to blogging is the results you see in Google ratings. Often times I will post to my blog and it will appear in my Google Alerts almost instantly. I post all my articles on my blog, as well as client’s articles and press releases. It’s a great way to generate more exposure for all your marketing efforts if you use your keywords effectively. If I’m posting on virtual assistants, I will make sure I post the keywords Virtual Assistants in the title and throughout the posting.”
Want to take your business to the next level or even six-figure status? It can be as easy as learning the ins and outs of blogging. Once you start seeing the results, you’ll be a believer just like us.
