How can CRM systems help small businesses with e-marketing?

When you’re looking to grow a small business, your marketing strategy is one of the most important things you need to consider. However, even though e-marketing can be a fantastic tool for businesses looking to make more of what they do, it’s important to be careful with the action you take so it has as much impact as possible.

This is why it is so important to consider customer relationship management whenever you are working on anything to do with e-marketing. This is particularly important for small businesses, as it is likely much of your business depends on high quality customer service and understanding your market base.

Companies like SAGE offer CRM software is something that can help you to coordinate your e-marketing campaigns and target your marketing at the right customers. This really matters because marketing incorporates many different departments of your business – the finance team need to know what’s going on for their accounts, the sales team need to be in the loop so they know exactly what to sell and your customer service staff need to know about the topics that are currently relevant to your customer base.

This is why a good CRM system will help you so much: it helps to centralise all your e-marketing information so communication between teams is made easier and more manageable. Employees can also use the software to track the progress of marketing campaigns so they know what action needs to be taken and when – you can also generate reports based on your activity, which can be a useful measure of your success.

Also, as you are probably aware, targeted marketing can be much more effective than a mass mail-out sent to your entire contact list. After all, your customers are likely to be a diverse bunch, with different interests. If, for instance, you are looking to market a particular product, you could use your CRM software database to identify the customers who have purchased something similar in the past and use them as the base for your campaign.

Good CRM systems also typically integrate e-marketing functions so you can carry out much of your work within the software, which is another useful management tool. For example, you could collate different groups of customers to send different emails to, and utilise marketing templates to form the material for your campaign. You can then utilise the report functions of your software to track issues such as your email click-through rate and determine your ROI.

Anyone reading this will undoubtedly be familiar with the internet, so you will most likely also be aware that often, using the internet can end up as something of an advertising overload. This helps to illustrate just how important it is for your e-marketing to be targeted and relevant to your customers, rather than just another generic advert on the internet. CRM solutions might not be able to guarantee all your customers will respond to your e-marketing, but they can certainly help ensure that you are sending the right message to the right people, giving your small business the best possible chance of marketing success.

The One Thing You Must Do When the Deck is Stacked

The deck was stacked against me that morning…

I moved my daughter over the weekend which involved driving a truck and trailer for 17 hours, moving more stuff than I care to remember, and wrestling a bear of a refrigerator to the point of physical exhaustion and sleep deprivation…

My alarm clock went off an hour early because I forgot to reset it…and so did my coffeemaker…

I skinned my right thumb while moving furniture. It decided to bleed on my favorite white dress shirt as I put it on that morning…

I couldn’t find a band-aid in the medicine cabinet and was forced to wake up my wife to find me one so I wouldn’t stain another white dress shirt…next time, I’ll take my chances with the shirt.

My keys weren’t where I thought I left them which meant I hunted all over the bedroom, re-waking my wife, until I realized they were in my winter coat which I wore the previous night when unhooking the trailer…

I took a case of my best-selling Work Positive in a Negative World book to put in the back of the Suburban and when shutting the lift gate, slammed it into my head. Miraculously the gate was undamaged…

…and as I left the garage, it started snowing and I had a 4-hour, round trip drive.

All of this happened in one hour on one morning as I prepared to travel to speak to a group of insurance and financial services associates. Their state director was to be present which would hopefully mean a great deal of referral business…it was a big morning.

You can imagine that after all of these “challenges” what I really wanted to do was to take off the white shirt, and just get back in bed and sleep it off.

But I didn’t.

Instead, I just kept going.

Sure, I was frustrated…make that, angry, as I left.

Sure, I was more tired…make that, exhausted, as I started the vehicle.

Sure, I was doubting myself…make that, insecure, as I wandered if I’d make any sense at all in the presentation.

But I just kept going.

I drove down some snowy roads, my head hurting, exhausted, praying I’d make it safely.

I put a smile on my face, and presented for an hour like my life depended on it.

When it was all said and done, I received a standing ovation from the participants.

The meeting planner said, “Awesome.”

The state director joined in the standing ovation, clapping enthusiastically and the meeting planner said she’d sell him for me.

Even when it seems like the deck is stacked against you…

…just keep going.

It’s the one thing you must do if you will ever succeed against a stacked deck.

The Secret to a Successful Online Business: It’s All About Building Relationships

People buy from those they know and trust. Nowhere is this more true than on the Internet, where you may never even meet anyone in person. Establishing a trust relationship with your potential online clients takes time, but it is well worth the effort!

Think about the last time you bought a product or service online, that had a substantial positive impact on your work or life in some way. If you were spending a good chunk of change (and perhaps investing a good bit of your time) on that purchase, chances are you did some research first: reading online forums and reviews to see what others had to say about them; contacting them directly with questions and observing how quick and helpful (and polite) their response was; maybe even buying a smaller product or service from them first. All to determine if you could trust this online business to deliver what they promise.

Your potential online clients are no different! They are going to want to know if they can trust you to deliver, too. Here are three specific ways you can work on building trust relationships online, and how each will help your business:

1. Get to know your customers.

This helps you more deeply understand what it is they need – making it a lot easier to tell them how what you are selling is going to meet their needs. Find out where they “hang” out, on discussion forums, social networks, etc., and get involved. Don’t just schmooze or try to sell your product right then and there — instead, add value to the conversation. If you are doing it right, you’ll be doing a whole lot more listening than talking.

2. Connect with your customer on a personal level.

Let them see you as a person, one who has some things in common with them. People will trust you, and ultimately buy from you, if they feel you are like them. This means being sincere and transparent – not pretending or making something up. If you can’t make that trust connection with one particular person, don’t force it – move on to someone else.

3. Keep up the trust relationship.

The relationship doesn’t stop after the sale! Clients who know and like you, and have benefited from what you have sold them, will tell others about you! It will be easy for them to recommend you because they are recommending a trusted vendor, not an impersonal business or product. If you’ve done a good job of providing them with something that makes their job or life easier, they won’t be able to wait to tell someone else!

Who Moved My Time? 3 Tips to Positively Spring Forward at Work

When the alarm clock radio has awakened me for the past few weeks, the sun was getting up and it was light. I like that.

This morning, it went off and the sun was still asleep and it was dark. I don’t like that.

Welcome to the first workday of Daylight Savings Time.

Sure, I’ll enjoy an extra hour of sunlight this evening. But that didn’t help any this morning.

Somebody moved my time.

Seems like somebody is always moving something, aren’t they? Especially in business…

Since everything is changing so rapidly, how do you keep up?

Here are 3 tips to help you positively spring forward at work:

Remind yourself: Change happens.

Of course this isn’t my first change to Daylight Savings Time. They move my time every year. In fact, they recently changed when they move my time. Kind of a double change…

Whether you’ve been in business a couple of years or a couple of decades, your business has experienced change. Some of the change was cyclical and you anticipated it. Other change was unpredictable, perhaps blind-sided you. You worked in the darkness.

Change happens.

Sure, our brains crave the familiar. Our minds seek out patterns we recognize. We want to do business in predictable, anticipated ways that create the results we want every time.

If such a time did exist, it’s gone forever.

Remind yourself daily that change happens…to everyone, everywhere.

Remember a previous change experience you survived

Since this isn’t my first change to Daylight Savings Time, I can remember a previous time that I survived. I can recall working in my rose garden in that extra hour of daylight. Or, trail riding our horses with my wife, enjoying a beautiful, hour-delayed sunset.

You can remember a previous time at work when change intruded on your familiar-driven business, plunging you into temporary darkness. Your vendor changed price structuring. The bank changed credit terms. Your key employee left you to change jobs. You preferred the light, i.e., your previous way of doing your work.

However, you discovered a way to survive the change. You adapted successfully. In fact, you found a way to make the new become familiar—through repetition, the same way you learned your multiplication tables in third grade. You just kept going until you did it.

Remember that time of change. Sit down and soak in the success of that experience. You survived it, perhaps now thrive because of it. And you will this one as well.

Relax and focus on your positive strengths

Yes, somebody moved my time, but there remain some constants in the change. I still have a vast reserve of positive strengths to call on in dealing with the changing time. I can relax and call on my time-adapting skills and embrace the change.

Your Work Positive strengths are still yours. What you do well may take on various expressions in a changing environment, but you have strengths that are still viable and necessary to your business.

Relax into your strengths. Now that you are reminded of the endemic nature of change, and remember a previous, successful experience with it, release the anxiety that often accompanies change and relax enough to do what you do well in your business.

The time may change, but the clock continues to work.

And so will you.

Positively spring forward as you Work Positive today.
